Inquiry

Term 1 Inquiry Learning:

We learnt about change in time and what effect this has on us. We looked at how Frasertown has changed over time and took a walk around the community meeting some cool people.

We looked at how Wairoa has changed over time and present some cool things about the changes we found.

Here is some of the things we did:

This is our wall display! We presented the changes over time of significant landmarks, buildings, features and people of Wairoa and Frasertown.

We redesigned our school logo and a new Code of Arms for Frasertown School.

This is a re-designed school logo! it names the three rivers! Awesome work!

This is a re-designed Code of Arms - it is much brighter than the one we have now!!

Here is a presentation about the Light house. We researched information about it from the Library and Websites. We created a picture of the lighthouse! Look how much it has changed!

Term 2 Inquiry Learning:

This term we are learning about structures.

This is a bit of a timeline of what we have been doing.

Week 2: We read the book the three billy goats gruff - we talked about the bridge that they cross over and what it looks like and how it was made etc.

We then looked discussed bridges in general - what we know about them.

We then discussed the word Structure and what we know about it. We made human pyramids and looked at how we can make our bodies in to a strong and solid structure.

Week 3: We made Pasta Structures - the goals was to see who could make the tallest structure with 50 pasta noodles, 1 marshmallow, 1 metre of cello tape and 1 metre of string.

Week 4 and 5: We began our inquiry cycle journey and looked at what we wanted to know and learn about bridges. We recorded on a KWL Chart all our ideas and then we began to research, gather, record and present our findings.

Week 6: This week we have used the app bridge basher and bridge architect to build 3D bridges ready to make our own models. This week we used to new materials - cards and paper clips and toothpicks/skewers and marshmallows to construct a bridge.

 I wonder what Week 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 will bring!!

We will keep you posted!

Week 7, 8 and 9: We participated in Technology Challenge tasks in preparation for the BP technology Challenge. We built airplanes and ramps.

The airplanes had to use straws, blu-tak, paper and a paper clip. It is a lot harder than you think.

The ramp need to be tall and steady enough to hold a marble rolling down it. The winner was the ramp that the marble rolled the furtherest.

Week 10: We planned all the materials we need to build a bridge that would hold a 300gram weight. We also designed what it might look like.

I look forward to see the wonderful creations in Week 11.

Week 11: Design and Model Time!

Here is a few snaps of what the kids designed and modelled. Some worked, some did not, but we re-crafted them.

Gardening Venture:

In Term 2 Room 2 and Room 3 explored the structure of a Vegetable Garden and what we need to build and grow a Vegetable Garden.

We began by drawing plans and writing letters to local businesses to help us gather a range of resources and materials to use to start our garden adventure off.

We have received a great range of material and resources from a lot of people and businesses and we have now begun to put the garden together and ready for some fruitful vegetable production.

Here are some pictures of our progress:

Term 3

This term is action packed. We have started our full immersion inquiry in Room 2 which will see Miss Wallace take a less guided/directive approach to teacher and see the students take more responsibility of their learning and learning goals.

We are looking at the world around us. The students have been busy researching information for a range of topic questions. We are using S.O.L.E sessions to help find our groupings and new strategies to learning to find information. A S.O.L.E session is a Self Organised Learning Environment where the students are responsible for finding themselves a group of 4, an iPad and a recording sheet. The students are allowed to move around the classroom freely and share and discuss learning with others. They are allowed to change groups if they feel their learning is being disturbed. Students have a time limit to research and record information they find and then all are made to present something that they or the group have found. These sessions have been working well in the classroom and has allowed Miss Wallace to see what needs to be taught before the independent inquiry journeys are undertaken.

To date students have begun filling out their Roadmap of a Learning Journey booklets and are ready to tackle their journeys. Look out for the booklets that come home.

We will keep you posted over the journey with our progress.
